The name Mbuyu is the Swahili name for the Baobab tree (Latin name: Adansonia digitata). This well known “ Big Tree” of Africa which can be found in the Savannas of the African continent and the Limpopo Province in South Africa, grows up to a height of 20 meters and carbon dating indicates that they may live to be 3000 years old.
Apart from the fact that the tree creates its own unique ecosystem, as its supports the lives of countless creatures, it has plenty uses. To name only a few: the fruit is rich in vit. C, the bark is pounded to make ropes, clothes and paper and glue can be made from the pollen.
The branches of the Baobab tree rather look like roots, as if it has been planted upside-down. There is various native legends around this feature….. like the one of the Bushmen that tells a story of a god that didn’t like the tree growing in his garden and throwing it out. The tree landed upside-down but continued to grow strong and tall. Certain tribes therefore believe that if you wash your baby boy in water soaked in the bark of a baobab, they will grow up to be mighty and strong…yes, just like the Giant of Africa…..The Baobab tree.
